چکیده

The present paper deals with with the learnability of indexed families L of uniformly recursive languages from positive data. We consider the in uence of three monotonicity demands to the e ciency of the learning process. The e ciency of learning is measured in dependence on the number of mind changes a learning algorithm is allowed to perform. The three notions of monotonicity re ect di erent formalizations of the requirement that the learner has to produce better and better generalizations when fed more and more data on the target concept. We distinguish between exact learnability (L has to be inferred with respect to L), class preserving learning (L has to be inferred with respect to some suitable chosen enumeration of all the languages from L), and class comprising inference (L has to be learned with respect to some suitable chosen enumeration of uniformly recursive languages containing at least all the languages from L). In particular, we prove that a relaxation of the relevant monotonicity requirement may result in an arbitrarily large speed-up.

Trading Monotonicity Demands versus Eciency

The present paper deals with the learnability of indexed families L of uniformly recursive languages from positive data. We consider the in uence of three monotonicity demands and their dual counterparts to the e ciency of the learning process. The e ciency of learning is measured in dependence on the number of mind changes a learning algorithm is allowed to perform. The three notions of (dual)...

Revenue monotonicity in deterministic, dominant-strategy combinatorial auctions

In combinatorial auctions using VCG, a seller can sometimes increase revenue by dropping bidders. In this paper we investigate the extent to which this counter-intuitive phenomenon can also occur under other deterministic dominant-strategy combinatorial auction mechanisms. Our main result is that such failures of “revenue monotonicity” can occur under any such mechanism that is weakly maximal—m...

Representations of knowledge states when writing: Keeping the reader's mind in mind

By 5 years children can represent knowledge states in Theory of Mind (ToM) tasks, yet elementary-school children rarely Think about their Reader’s Mind (ToRM) when writing. This research reduced the informationprocessing demands of writing by using dictations to examine awareness of a reader’s ignorance. Children aged 5 to 7 years dictated various pairs of letters (e.g., about playing in the sn...

Conducting the train of thought: working memory capacity, goal neglect, and mind wandering in an executive-control task.

On the basis of the executive-attention theory of working memory capacity (WMC; e.g., M. J. Kane, A. R. A. Conway, D. Z. Hambrick, & R. W. Engle, 2007), the authors tested the relations among WMC, mind wandering, and goal neglect in a sustained attention to response task (SART; a go/no-go task). In 3 SART versions, making conceptual versus perceptual processing demands, subjects periodically in...
